Scaling & Root Planing
To stop gum disease from progressing, we have to target the bacteria-filled plaque and tartar that have built up along the gumline. We do this with a two-pronged procedure called scaling and root planing. First, we break up the plaque and tartar deposits using special instruments, removing the source of the infection. At that point, we smooth out the roots of the teeth so that the gums can more easily begin healing and reattaching themselves to the teeth.
Arestin Antibiotic Therapy
While scaling and root planing remove much of the bacteria that cause gum disease, some may still linger in the deep pockets between the gums and the teeth. For this reason, we may administer a topical antibiotic called Arestin to these areas. Arestin consists of countless microspheres that all contain antibacterial medicine. After application, the medicine spreads throughout the tissue, eliminating bacteria in places that even our advanced instruments can’t reach.
