Understanding How Dental Insurance Works

Dental insurance has a lot in common with regular medical insurance; they both involve paying monthly premiums in exchange for covering some or all of your care costs. The main difference is that medical insurance pays for treating health issues as they arise, while dental insurance focuses on preventing problems from developing in the first place. So, your plan probably offers more coverage for standard checkups and cleanings than for services used to treat tooth decay and damage.

What Does My Dental Insurance Cover?

Not all dental insurance plans are the same, but many of them come with a similar framework of the levels of coverage they offer for various types of services:

  • Preventive services, such as checkups, cleanings, and X-rays, are covered at 80-100%.
  • Restorative procedures, such as crowns and fillings, are covered at 50-80%.
  • Cosmetic treatments, such as whitening and veneers, are NOT covered because they’re considered elective.

To maximize your savings, it’s best to keep up with your six-month checkups and cleanings. Not only are they probably fully covered, but they’ll help you avoid paying for expensive restorative procedures later on. Your smile and your wallet will thank you!
