Why Are Regular Dental Checkups & Cleanings Important?

While it can sometimes seem like toothaches and cavities appear out of nowhere, this is rarely the case. Severe oral health problems are typically a consequence of plaque and tartar buildup, which are bacterial deposits that damage the enamel. Even if you’re a dental hygiene pro, it’s impossible to clear up all of this bacteria without the help of a dentist.

Routine visits allow us to check that these plaque deposits haven’t overrun your smile, discover oral health problems in their infancy, and to clean in places that you won’t be able to normally.

What to Expect During a Dental Checkup

Checkups consist of several different oral exams, done to find any issues that could be present. At first, this involves taking a look at the teeth, gums, and any existing dental work. We’ll also take a look at the soft tissues in your mouth, checking for any signs of oral cancer. Once a year, we’ll perform x-rays of your smile, making sure that there aren’t any problems lurking beneath the surface.

If we find anything, we’ll begin talking with you about a treatment plan. We’ll answer any questions that you have about at-home dental hygiene or a condition you’re concerned about, as well as to ensure that we have an up-to-date medical history for you.

What to Expect During a Dental Cleaning

As a part of your checkup, we’ll look for any areas of the mouth where plaque and tartar buildup are the worst. During regular cleanings, we will use specialized tools to scrape away any of these bacterial deposits along your gums, between your teeth, and toward the back of your mouth. This effectively combats the risk of developing tooth decay or gum disease due to these bacteria.

After this, we’ll polish and floss your teeth, leaving you with a perfectly clean smile. If you want to know firsthand how good it feels to be completely plaque free, give us a call and we’ll be happy to bring you in for an appointment.
