How We Treat Dental Emergencies

  • Schedule your appointment – Over the phone, we’ll ask you specific questions about your symptoms, which helps us determine how urgently you need to come in. From there, we can schedule your visit. In most cases, we’re able to see emergency patients later that day. We can also provide tips to help you manage your discomfort until then.
  • Identify the problem – When you get to our dental office, our dentists will perform a quick yet thorough exam of the part of your mouth that is troubling you. Based on what they find, they can recommend a particular course of treatment to solve the problem.
  • Treat your emergency – Once we have identified the root cause of the problem, we can begin addressing it. Because Dr. Aloian has advanced training in many areas of dentistry, she can perform a wide variety of procedures in-house, keeping your referrals to a minimum.

The Most Common Dental Emergencies

Dental problems almost never get better without treatment, so you should give us a call even if you’re not sure that your situation needs immediate attention. Below, you’ll find some of the most common dental emergencies we see and some tips for handling them until you can reach our dental office.

Understanding the Cost of Dental Emergencies

Because dental emergencies come in nearly limitless varieties, the costs of the treatments needed to address them will differ for every patient. Our goal will always be to restore your smile in the most efficient and effective way possible, and we’ll be sure to outline the costs of our recommended treatments before moving forward. We’ll even maximize your dental insurance benefits for you so that you can save while avoiding the stress of paperwork.

Keys to Preventing Dental Emergencies

Although accidents aren’t completely unavoidable, there are several things you can do to significantly reduce your chances of harming your teeth and gums. At your biannual visits with our team at Moya Dental, we will provide you with specific instructions and recommendations based on your unique dental needs. In the meantime, however, you can read on for some general tips for keeping your smile in tip-top shape!

Visit Your Dentist Regularly

If you only visit our dental team when you’re hurting, then it’s already too late! To keep your teeth and gums healthy, we need to conduct an exam and cleaning every six months. That way, we can prevent infection and decay from developing altogether, and, if an oral health issue does arise, we can identify any potential emergencies early on. In short, if it’s been more than six months since your last checkup and cleaning, now is the time to schedule your next one!

Maintain Good Oral Hygiene At Home

Of course, taking care of your teeth on a daily basis is equally as important. We recommend starting by brushing your teeth for two full minutes at least twice a day (using fluoridated toothpaste helps a lot!). Additionally, you should rinse with an antimicrobial mouthwash and floss between every tooth and behind your molars daily. Remember that you also need to clean your tongue regularly and replace your toothbrush every three to four months in order to properly remove food particles, plaque, and bacteria.

Stick to a Nutritious Diet

There are two main things you need to keep in mind: limiting sugary items and eating lots of nutrient-dense foods. The first is important because sugar is one of the leading causes of tooth decay. As a result, over-consuming soda, ice cream, candy, and the like can quickly increase your chances of dental damage. The second is important because your body needs vitamins, nutrients, and minerals to fight off infections, keep your jawbone strong, and preserve the health of your teeth and gums.

Wear a Mouthguard

Whether you participate in a contact sport or a non-contact sport, you need to wear a mouthguard on a regular basis. After all, roughly five million teeth are knocked-out each year during sports-related accidents! We also encourage our patients who chronically grind or clench their teeth to wear a mouthguard to prevent premature wear and tear.

Use Tools to Open Packages, Not Your Teeth

Patients use their teeth as tools all the time – whether it’s to remove a clothing tag, hold their keys, or open a tube of mascara. Remember, your teeth aren’t designed to withstand that kind of pressure and can quickly crack or fracture under the weight. So, always use the appropriate tools instead!

Root Canal Treatment

Despite the scary reputation that root canal treatment has garnered, it shouldn’t cause any more discomfort than having a filling placed. In fact, root canals are typically able to relieve toothaches caused by infection or decay deep inside of the tooth. The procedure involves removing the damaged tissue from the tooth and then restoring it with a crown. Not only does this stop the pain, but it can prevent the tooth from needing to be extracted.

Tooth Extractions

Of course, we’ll never recommend extracting a tooth unless it is the only option. This is often the case when a tooth is so damaged, decayed, or infected that it cannot be repaired by any other means. We understand that having a tooth removed can be nerve-racking, which is why we’ll do whatever we need to make sure you feel comfortable during and after the procedure. Once you’ve healed, we can discuss replacing the tooth with a dental implant or another restorative option.

Wisdom Tooth Extractions

The wisdom teeth usually erupt in a person’s late teens or early twenties, and they can end up causing more harm than good if they’re not removed. Since many people don’t have sufficient room in their jaws to accommodate these additional teeth, they can press against the other teeth and cause discomfort, infection, and more. Dr. Aloian can perform comfortable and safe wisdom tooth extractions, and we urge you to call us if you suspect that you or someone you love could benefit from this treatment.
